Spine Surgery Fellowship

The one-year orthopedic spine fellowship is an outstanding opportunity for a qualified orthopedic surgeon to train in diagnosis and management of disorders involving the entire spine. The fellowship emphasizes understanding the natural history of various spinal disorders, while including extensive hands on experience in minimally invasive, technologically advanced anterior and posterior spine surgery. The combined patients of our full-time spine surgeons will provide the fellow with ample exposure to all areas of spine pathology including trauma, tumors, infection, deformity and degenerative problems of the spine, and spinal instrumentation. The surgical experience includes approximately 900 spine cases per year.

Along with the clinical responsibilities, the Fellow is expected to participate in ongoing, as well as original, clinical and/or basic science research projects. The subjects for the research will be determined early on in the fellowship. A full research staff is available to assist the surgeons and fellows in coordinating research projects.

Goals
To acquire the skills necessary to assess and manage patients who present with spine-related complaints

To understand and be able to implement the additional studies necessary to render an accurate diagnosis based on a combination of parameters which would include history, physical examination, plain radiographs, and other laboratory tests and imaging studies.

To develop the skills necessary to plan and perform warranted surgical procedures involving anterior and posterior approaches to the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.

To develop the surgical expertise needed to perform specialized surgery in application of spinal instrumentation including anterior/posterior plates and screws, transarticular screws, various techniques of fusion.

To develop skills as an investigator by designing, implementing, completing, and interpreting retrospective or prospective clinical studies, and in selected situations, basic science research projects

To exhibit professionalism at all times.
