Dr. Chan Roonprapunt, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon, joining the Spine Institute with a broad experience in the treatment of surgical disorders of the nervous system. He has a special interest in Chiari Malformations, syringomyelia, and complex craniocervical spine problems.

Before joining the full-time faculty at Beth Israel and Roosevelt Hospital Medical Centers, Dr. Roonprapunt was a member of The Chiari Institute at North Shore-LIJ Health system. He completed his neurosurgical training at Montefiore Medical Center and Roosevelt Hospital of New York. He was chief resident his final year of residency. He continued his training by completing an orthopedic spine fellowship at the Beth Israel Spine Institute of New York, where he gained a significant experience in spinal instrumentation in the management of spinal degeneration and deformity.

 

With a unique background in neurosurgery and orthopedic spine, he is prepared to treat all spine conditions, by utilizing minimally invasive techniques of decompression and stabilization. He also has experience in artificial disc replacement in the cervical and lumbar spine. He has published multiple book chapters and articles in the neurosurgical literature regarding management of Chiari Malformations and intramedullary spinal tumors. He has lectured nationally on these topics.

Dr. Roonprapunt graduated from the medical scientist training program at New York University School of Medicine, where he received MD and PhD degrees. His PhD thesis involved the study of acute spinal cord injury. He earned his B.A. degree in Biology at Cornell University. He has been recognized within the “Guide to America’s Top Surgeons 2007” by the Consumer’s Research Council of America and Strathmore’s “Who’s Who 2007-2008.”
